Gearing up for any PGA Tour tournament is nerve-wracking at best. But gearing up for a tournament where you won your first and only (so far!) PGA Tour victory last year could be an entirely different beast altogether. However, for Kevin Streelman, seven-year veteran of the PGA Tour, excitement is in the air as he prepares to go for his second straight title at the Valspar Championship this weekend in Florida.
Last March, Kevin shot a solid and patient final Sunday round to win the Tampa Bay Championship, newly named the Valspar Championship, on Copperhead Course. Since then, he has hit several more milestones: playing in his second Masters, reaching a career-best 36th in the world golf rankings, and most importantly, welcoming his first child, Sophia, into the world in December, with his wife, Courtney.
“I am extremely excited to defend my first tournament victory. These past two weeks have been our first travel stint with Sophia, and except for the lack of sleep, we are having a ton of fun. It’s awesome to be back at the location of my first win and I’m really hoping to rekindle some of the magic,” said Kevin about this weekend.
When asked if he physically and mentally prepares any differently for particular tournaments, Kevin responded that he tries to prepare the same way regardless of the tournament. Earlier in his career he tended to make too big of a deal of the bigger events and over prepare, and it would result in too much pressure to perform well. Now he tries to prepare the same way each week and simply let the good finishes come as they will.
Going into this tournament, it definitely helps to feel a slight leg up on the course where he had such success last year.
“I do feel confident playing this golf course. It was fun playing the Pro-Am Wednesday and remembering some of the shots I hit on the back nine last year. I hit the ball great last week in Doral and am excited for this upcoming stretch of tournaments,” Kevin said.
Despite the demanding PGA Tour schedule, PR events and sleepless nights from a newborn baby, Kevin feels on top of his game.
“Avitae Caffeine Water has helped me stay alert on the golf course after many sleepless nights. It feels so much better to ditch the coffee and pick up refreshing water with the same kick. Avitae really helps me get my day started out here on the PGA Tour.”
We wish Kevin the best and hope he can win his second straight title at Valspar! You can follow Kevin as he plays this weekend on Golf Channel, NBC and Sirius XM.
